J J Eckhardt discusses his novel ‘Surviving Zeptulgar’
Surviving Zeptulgar is based on the first story I wrote when I started my writing journey at age fifty. The short story, Six Months Ago Today, was only a little over 10,000 words and was poorly written with bad grammar, completely in journal style. You can read the story on Your Story Club.
Later, I wrote a more extended version with a different, less optimistic ending. The story, Moments In Time, was still entirely in journal style and came in at 38,000 words. At that time, I decided to try an entire novel, which became A Journey Toward Tomorrow – The Beginning.
With more experience and confidence in writing a traditional format story with dialog, I decided to go back to Moments, and convert it into an entire novel, but I knew it couldn’t take place on Earth, so I created a world known as Tanacun. Surviving Zeptulgar, The Personal Journal of Johlnz Dezlond Zavix 1, is the story of the near destruction of the Tana race.

Surviving Zeptulgar is based on the handwritten journal of Johlnz Dezlond Zavix I, discovered hidden in the city of Nel Experza, in the year 0099 AC. His Great-Jarson, Johlnz Dezlond Zavix II, found the journal and published the memoir in the year 0100 AC.
The journal is a first-hand account of life after comet Zeptulgar nearly destroyed the planet of Tanacun in the year 3988. His journey and involvement with one of the central new communities established to continue the Tana race are well documented in this, the only known first-hand account.
To rebuild from the destruction, a group of survivors must journey to the planet’s equator to avoid the aftermath of Comet Zeptulgar.
