Nick Snape discusses his new series ‘The Scorching’
So, you may well ask, how does a guy who writes military sci-fi end up writing in a completely different subgenre? Well, you asked, though the answer is, as always, complicated.
Perhaps Firstly we should deal with the Weapons of Choice Series, which despite its mil sci-fi origins, well isn’t. I’ll direct you to the review by the respected SPR website where the final book earned their Five Star rating and gold award.
And perhaps the final line: ‘This last instalment is a true capstone on the Weapons of Choice saga, unleashing one more salvo of epic sci-fi creativity that raises the bar for the genre as a whole.’

Military sci-fi, right? No, emotionally evocative action science fiction, perhaps. Though I would say the first in the series has more of the military bent but focuses on survival. It was this review that persuaded me that well, I could write, so why not take a risk? Hence, The Scorching Series which kicks off with ‘Just Press Play’. These are to be three standalone novels, each playing out a point of view of an Earth devastated by climate change dubbed ‘The Scorching’. In the first, released 30th May, we see the world through Joshua Nkosi’s eyes ‒ literally ‒ as he uses an eye-mod to record and narrate his life straight to you, the reader, like an old school ‘tuber vid. Fair warning, this starts off light and descends into the murky world of terrorism and conspiracy as we learn of the Drathken, a benevolent alien race who arrive to help, and the HLA who seek to end the accord. Nkosi also has a journey to make, one that his sardonic wit pulls you along with. Ah, and of course we have MARC, Multi-Purpose Recovery Cephalopod, or in Nkosi’s world, Marc, his best friend and modded partner. Hey, we all need a friend.
I won’t add much more, except perhaps, a few quotes from the recent SPR review:
"An inventive new sci-fi series, carving its own niche in a hugely entertaining mash-up of post-apocalyptic, alien invasion, and climate fiction. With genetic modification, mind control, conspiratorial rebellions, and a powerful undercurrent of savage social critique, this opening of a new trilogy is a staggeringly original and timely release from a masterful voice in modern sci-fi." Self-Publishing Review, ★★★★★
Hey, mil sci-fi guy, right?
